Pro Tip

Book 6–8 months in advance: Most popular "Mid-Range" tented camps in the Serengeti fill up fast for the July–September window.

Dust is real: Bring a "buff" or scarf to cover your face during drives, and a dry bag for your camera equipment.

Zanzibar Extension: Many travelers add a 3-day beach stay in Zanzibar after their 5-day safari to wash off the dust.

Important Notes

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Is 5 days enough time to see the Serengeti?

Yes, but be prepared for driving. It takes about 6–7 hours to get from Arusha to the Serengeti. A 5-day trip gives you roughly 1.5 to 2 days inside the Serengeti itself, which is sufficient to see the Big Five and the heart of the plains.

  • June to October (Dry Season): Best for general wildlife viewing as animals congregate around water holes. This is also when you’ll see the dramatic Mara River crossings in the North (though 5 days is tight for reaching the far North by road; consider a “fly-in” option).
  • January to February: The Calving Season in the Southern Serengeti. Thousands of wildebeest are born daily, attracting high predator action.
  • March to May (Long Rains): The “Green Season.” It’s beautiful and cheaper, but some roads can be muddy and difficult.

The Northern Circuit is one of the best places on Earth to see them.

  • Ngorongoro Crater is your best bet for the rare Black Rhino.
  • Serengeti and Tarangire are famous for Lions and Leopards.
  • Elephants and Buffalo are abundant across all parks.
  • Clothing: Think layers. The Ngorongoro rim is surprisingly cold at night (down to 10°C), while the Serengeti plains are hot (30°C+).
  • Colors: Wear khaki, beige, or olive. Avoid blue and black (they attract tsetse flies) and bright white (shows dust instantly).
  • Gear: Binoculars are essential. Even if your guide has a pair, having your own makes a huge difference.
  • Health: You will likely need Yellow Fever vaccination proof and Malaria prophylactics. Consult a travel clinic 6 weeks before.
