7-Day Tanzania Lodge and Tented Safari

  • 7 Days / 6 Nights
  • Medium
  • Tarangire, Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Lake Manyara

Tour Overview

This exclusive 7-day safari is a journey through Tanzania’s most famous national parks, offering a balance of comfortable lodge stays and authentic tented camp experiences. You will witness incredible biodiversity, from the enormous elephant herds of Tarangire to the dense predator population of the Ngorongoro Crater, culminating in the vast plains of the Serengeti.

Summary

Why Choose 7-Day Tanzania Lodge and Tented Safari

A 3-day safari is often too rushed, while 10+ days of dusty roads can lead to “safari fatigue.” 7 days is the “sweet spot” because:

  • It allows for 2 full nights in the Serengeti, which is crucial since the park is massive.
  • It includes the scenic drives through the Great Rift Valley, giving you a glimpse of Maasai culture along the way.
  • The pace allows for early morning game drives (when predators are most active) without feeling like you are constantly packing and unpacking.

Logistics and Accessibility

Unlike the Southern Circuit (which often requires expensive bush planes), the Northern Circuit is easily accessible by road from Arusha.

  • Custom 4×4 Vehicles: You’ll travel in a Land Cruiser with a pop-up roof for 360-degree viewing.
  • Expert Guides: Because this route is so popular, the guides here are among the most experienced in Africa at tracking wildlife.

Day 1

Welcome to the Gateway of Adventure

Welcome to Tanzania! Your journey begins the moment you touch down at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO). After clearing customs, keep an eye out for your friendly safari guide, who will be waiting with a warm smile (and likely a sign with your name on it).

Today’s Highlights

  • The Transition: A comfortable private transfer from the airport to the city of Arusha.
  • The Vibe: Low-key and restorative. Today is all about shaking off the jet lag and soaking in the first sights and sounds of East Africa.
  • The Briefing: You’ll meet with your guide for a casual pre-safari briefing. This is the perfect time to ask last-minute questions about gear, wildlife, or the local culture while you finalize the plan for the days ahead.

Your Sanctuary: Mvuli Hotel

Located on the outskirts of Arusha, Mvuli Hotel offers a peaceful retreat away from the city’s hustle. It’s the ideal spot to recharge before your safari kicks into high gear.

  • Atmosphere: Lush gardens and a quiet environment.
  • Dining: Enjoy a fresh, locally-sourced dinner at the hotel restaurant.
  • Rest: Settle into your room for a good night’s sleep—you’ll want your energy for the morning!

Day 2

Moshi to Tarangire National Park

Detail: After breakfast, you will embark on a scenic drive to Tarangire National Park (approximately 3-4 hours). Known as the “Elephant Sanctuary,” Tarangire boasts one of the highest concentrations of elephants in the world, often seen congregating along the Tarangire River. The landscape is dominated by magnificent baobab trees, which provide a striking backdrop to your game viewing. Besides elephants, you will look for lion, leopard, cheetah, and a variety of plains game like zebra and wildebeest, especially during the dry season when they are drawn to the permanent water source.

Activity: Morning drive and full afternoon game drive.

Day 3

Tarangire to Serengeti National Park

Detail: Enjoy a final, short early morning game drive in Tarangire to catch predators before the heat of the day. You will then drive to the renowned Serengeti National Park (a journey that is a game drive in itself!). The name Serengeti comes from the Maasai word siringet, meaning “the place where the land runs on forever.” You will cross the vast plains, famous for the annual Great Wildebeest Migration (seasonal). The central Seronera region is particularly rich in wildlife, hosting the highest density of large predators. Upon arrival, you will head straight out for an afternoon game drive, seeking out lion prides, cheetah on the hunt, and the elusive leopard.

Activity: Morning game drive in Tarangire, transit, and afternoon game drive in Serengeti.

Day 4

Serengeti to Ngorongoro Conservation Area

Start your day with a crucial early morning game drive in the Serengeti, a prime time for spotting nocturnal animals retreating and predators beginning their hunt. This is often the best opportunity to see cheetah and leopard activity. After a late breakfast or packed lunch, you will begin your drive out of the Serengeti, passing through the Ngorongoro Conservation Area with an en-route game drive. You will ascend to the crater rim, where you will check into your lodge for spectacular views over the surrounding highlands.

Activity: Early morning game drive in the Serengeti and transfer to Ngorongoro.

Day 5

Ngorongoro Crater Game Drive

Detail: Today is dedicated to exploring the UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Ngorongoro Crater. Descend 600 meters into the crater floor, a natural amphitheater teeming with wildlife. As one of the most densely populated wildlife areas on earth, it offers an almost guaranteed chance of spotting the Big Five (lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, and the critically endangered Black Rhino). You will enjoy a memorable picnic lunch near the hippo pool before ascending the crater walls in the late afternoon.

  • Activity: Full day descent and game drive into the Ngorongoro Crater.

(Note: The itinerary has a second night at Marera Lodge, which is located near the Ngorongoro/Lake Manyara area)

Manyara National Park and Transfer to Arusha

After breakfast, you will proceed to Lake Manyara National Park. This park is famed for its stunning soda lake (which often shimmers with thousands of flamingos seasonally), a lush groundwater forest at the entrance, and the rare tree-climbing lions (though sightings are not guaranteed). You’ll spot large troops of baboons, blue monkeys, hippos, giraffes, and a wide variety of birdlife, including giant fig and mahogany trees. In the late afternoon, you will complete the final drive to Arusha city.

Activity: Morning game drive in Lake Manyara and transfer to Arusha.

Important Notes

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

When is the best time to go?
  • Dry Season (June to October): The absolute best for wildlife viewing as animals congregate around water holes. This is also the peak time for the Great Migration river crossings.
  • Calving Season (January to February): Great for seeing thousands of wildebeest calves in the southern Serengeti and high predator action.
  • Green Season (March to May): More rain, but the landscape is lush, prices are lower, and there are fewer crowds.
  • Lodges: These are permanent structures similar to hotels or boutiques, often with stone walls, swimming pools, and full amenities.
  • Permanent Tented Camps: Don’t let the word “tent” fool you. These feature walk-in canvas rooms on wooden platforms with real beds, en-suite bathrooms (flush toilets and hot showers), and electricity. They offer a more “authentic” bush soundscape.

Most lodges and tented camps use solar power. You can usually charge your devices in your room or at a central charging station. Wi-Fi is common in common areas (lounge/dining), but it can be spotty due to the remote locations.

  • Layers are key: Mornings and evenings (especially at the Ngorongoro Crater rim) are surprisingly cold, while afternoons are hot.
  • Colors: Wear neutral tones (khaki, beige, olive). Avoid bright blue or black, as these colors attract Tsetse flies.
  • Shoes: You don’t need heavy hiking boots unless you have a walking safari planned. Comfortable sneakers or sturdy sandals are usually fine.
  • Visa: Most nationalities (including US, UK, and EU) require a visa. You can apply for an eVisa online ($50–$100 depending on nationality) or get one on arrival.
  • Vaccinations: Yellow Fever is mandatory if you are arriving from a country with a risk of transmission. Malaria prophylaxis is highly recommended—consult your doctor.

Tipping is a customary way to show appreciation in Tanzania. Common guidelines (per day, per group):

  • Safari Driver-Guide: $20 – $30 per day.
  • Lodge/Camp Staff: $10 – $15 per day (usually placed in a communal “Tip Box” at reception).

Yes, almost all 7-day lodge safaris are Full Board. This includes breakfast, a picnic lunch (often eaten at a scenic spot in the park), and a multi-course dinner at your accommodation.
