Even on the 3-day trip, try to hike up Little Meru (3,820m) on Day 2. It only takes an hour and helps significantly with altitude adjustment before the midnight push.
The final hour to the peak involves scrambling over volcanic rock. Keep your hands free (use a backpack, not a shoulder bag) and use trekking poles for the massive descent.
Many climbers use altitude medication (Acetazolamide) to help with the rapid ascent. Consult your doctor before your trip.

Early October is still stable, but by November, less stable weather patterns can bring rain every day for a short period. March begins with a short dry window, but by mid-March the long rains begin.
Essential Packing List
Footwear: Broken-in waterproof hiking boots + camp shoes.
Clothing: Moisture-wicking base layers, fleece mid-layer, and a heavy down jacket for the summit.
Headlamp: Crucial for the 1:00 AM summit push.
Trekking Poles: Highly recommended for the steep descent.
The 3-day climb is physically demanding because it merges the descent of the last two days into one.
The Challenge: On Day 3, you will reach the summit (Socialist Peak) at dawn and then descend all the way back to the Momella Gate.
Technicality: There are narrow ridges and slight “scrambling” sections near the summit that require a steady foot and no fear of heights.
The best weather windows are during the dry seasons:
June to October: Clear skies and the best views of Kilimanjaro.
December to February: Generally dry and slightly warmer than the June–October window.
Note: Avoid March to May (long rains) as trails become very slippery and visibility is poor.
Unlike Kilimanjaro, Mount Meru is located within Arusha National Park, which is home to large wildlife like Cape Buffalo and elephants. It is mandatory to be accompanied by an armed park ranger for safety during the lower forest sections.
Layers: Temperatures at the summit can drop well below freezing (-5°C to -10°C), while the base is tropical.
Footwear: Sturdy, broken-in hiking boots are essential.
Headlamp: Crucial for the midnight summit push.
Water: At least 3 liters per day. Note that single-use plastic bottles are prohibited in the park; use reusable bladders or Nalgene bottles.
