Machame Camp

Machame Camp is the first overnight camp on the Machame Route, one of the most popular routes on Mount Kilimanjaro. Located at approximately 3,000 meters (9,840 feet) above sea level, the camp is positioned just above the rainforest zone on the southwestern side of the mountain. It serves as an important acclimatization point and introduces climbers to the changing landscapes of Kilimanjaro.

The trek to Machame Camp begins at Machame Gate and passes through dense rainforest filled with tall trees, ferns, and moss-covered trails. As climbers gain elevation, the vegetation gradually becomes less dense, transitioning toward the moorland zone where the camp is located. The scenery around the camp features open landscapes, rolling hills, and panoramic views of Mount Meru on clear days.

Machame Camp is known for its lively atmosphere because it hosts climbers from different trekking groups beginning their summit journey. The camp is often busy during peak climbing seasons, creating a social environment where trekkers from around the world share experiences and excitement about the climb ahead. Evenings are usually cool and misty, with temperatures dropping significantly after sunset.

Accommodation at Machame Camp consists of mountain tents set up on designated camping grounds. Basic facilities include toilets and ranger stations, while trekking crews provide meals and camping support. The camp’s location at a higher altitude helps climbers begin adjusting to thinner air before continuing to higher camps such as Shira Camp.

Machame Camp Highlights

  • First overnight stop on the Machame Route

Pro Tip

Even on a 2-day trek, you’ll likely have porters carrying your main bag. Keep your rain gear and camera in your daypack so you can reach them instantly!

Important Notes

Packing for a 2-day trek on the Machame route is a bit unique. Since the full Machame route usually takes 6–7 days to summit, a 2-day trip is typically a “taster” trek—you’ll likely hike from the Machame Gate to Machame Camp on Day 1, and then explore toward the Shira Plateau on Day 2 before descending.

Because you aren’t going to the arctic summit zone, you can skip the heavy-duty expedition gear (like -20°C sleeping bags or heavy down parkas), but you still need to prepare for rain and chilly mountain nights.

The “Big Three” Essentials

  • Daypack (25-35L): You’ll carry this yourself with water, snacks, and extra layers.
  • Hiking Boots: Must be broken in! The trail through the rainforest can be muddy and slippery.
  • Sleeping Bag: A 3-season bag (rated to about 0°C/32°F) is plenty for Machame Camp.

Clothing (The Layering System)

Avoid cotton at all costs—it stays wet and makes you cold. Stick to synthetic or merino wool.

  • Base Layer: 1 moisture-wicking T-shirt and 1 long-sleeve shirt.
  • Mid Layer: A fleece jacket or a light “puffy” down jacket for the evening.
  • Outer Layer: A high-quality waterproof rain jacket (the rainforest lives up to its name).
  • Bottoms: 1 pair of hiking trousers and a pair of waterproof over-trousers just in case.
  • Feet: 2 pairs of thermal hiking socks (merino wool is best).

Head & Hands

  • Sun Hat: The equatorial sun is brutal, even if it feels cool.
  • Warm Beanie: For the chilly night at camp.
  • Sunglasses: High UV protection.
  • Light Gloves: Optional, but nice for early morning starts.

Gear & Personal Items

  • Trekking Poles: Highly recommended for the descent to save your knees.
  • Headlamp: Essential for navigating camp at night.
  • Water Storage: A 2-3L hydration bladder (Camelbak) or sturdy bottles.
  • Power Bank: Cold air drains phone batteries faster than usual.
  • Toiletries: Wet wipes (your “mountain shower”), sunscreen, lip balm with SPF, and hand sanitizer.

Small Luxuries

  • High-Energy Snacks: Chocolate, nuts, or energy bars to supplement the provided meals.
  • Dry Bags: Put your spare clothes in Ziplocs or dry bags inside your pack to ensure they stay dry if it pours.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Can I reach the summit in 2 days?

No. It is physically and physiologically impossible for a standard trekker to summit and descend via the Machame Route in 48 hours. The summit is at 5,895m (19,341 ft), and attempting to climb that high from the gate (1,800m) in two days would lead to severe, life-threatening Altitude Sickness (HAPE or HACE).

Yes. You cannot enter Kilimanjaro National Park without:

  • A licensed mountain guide.
  • Paid park permits (Conservation fees, camping fees, and rescue fees).

It is considered moderate.

  • Day 1 is a steady climb through a humid rainforest. It can be muddy and slippery.
  • Day 2 is steeper as you leave the forest and enter the heath zone, but since you aren’t carrying a full summit pack and aren’t pushed to extreme altitudes, most people with average fitness find it very manageable.

Even for a short trip, the weather on Kilimanjaro is unpredictable. You will need:

  • Waterproof gear: A shell jacket and rain pants (the rainforest is famous for downpours).
  • Layers: It gets significantly colder at Machame Camp (2,835m) once the sun goes down.
  • Footwear: Broken-in hiking boots with good ankle support.
  • Daypack: For your water, snacks, and extra layers.

You might see the Machame Route referred to as the “Whiskey Route.” This nickname exists to contrast it with the Marangu Route (the “Coca-Cola Route”). While Marangu is considered “easier” because you sleep in huts, Machame is “tougher” (like whiskey) because you sleep in tents and the terrain is steeper

To the Uhuru Peak and back I summited Uhuru Peak in February 2026 via the 7-day Lemosho route. Kilimanjaro Bound was recommended to me by friends who had summited Mt. Kilimanjaro in 2021. The company accommodated my request on just three weeks’ notice. On the pre-trek day, I met my guide for a briefing about the ascent itinerary and the rental gear I would need. The ascent crew consisted of eight people who supported my daily needs throughout the adventure. My guide, Aggrey, was punctual, tactful, and patient. He was responsive to my requests, encouraging when needed, and knowledgeable about the wildlife and culture of Tanzania and other African countries. Aggrey was just the perfect guide for me - both in personality and in the mental support he provided throughout this challenging experience. My chef, Eli, prepared delicious meals, including fresh salads, fruits, and crepes with fruit jam which were my favorite. Kelvin was the first person I saw every morning, bringing me wash water and hot tea, and the last one to wrap up the day the same way. I also appreciated the hard work of the rest of the team—Colin, Gift, Baraka, Samson, and Michael—who carried our gear from camp to camp, brought fresh water from mountain streams, and maintained the portable toilet. They even met me halfway on the most challenging sections of the route (Lava Tower and the descent from Uhuru Peak, in my case) and helped me make it back to camp when I was super exhausted. Tips / What I wish I had done differently: I wish I had brought beef jerky or other dried meat/fish snacks, as meals from day 3 or 4 onward did not include meat due to limited storage capabilities for fresh meat products on a long trek. I wish I had taken a daytime nap or gotten more sleep before summit night (“push night”), as lack of sleep combined with high altitude made me very drowsy during the final ascent and made it more challenging.

An Unforgettable Experience – We All Summited Climbing Kilimanjaro with Kilimanjaro Bound was truly life-changing. We did the 6-day Marangu route with a small group of four, and every one of us reached the summit—something I credit directly to the incredible support we received on the mountain. Our main guide, Aggrey, was exceptional. His calm leadership, constant encouragement, and attention to how each of us was feeling made all the difference, especially on summit night. When things got hard, he never let us doubt ourselves. Reaching the summit together was emotional, humbling, and unforgettable. Kilimanjaro Bound doesn’t just guide climbs—they take care of people. I can’t recommend them highly enough.

Best experience ever with Kilimanjaro Bound!! I just finished 6 days on the Marangu route to Mt Kili, could not have done it without this amazing crew! All 4 in our group reached the summit!. Our guides, cook, porters, everyone worked so hard to make this experience happen. Everything was organized, great communication, we learned so much about the country, history, culture, wildlife, terrain. I can not say enough praise about this group, I’ve never seen such hard work, positive attitudes, and big smiles. You can tell they love what they are doing and care about their clients. It is truly one of the hardest things I’ve done and once in a lifetime experience. Thank you all for making it happen!!

????️⭐️Amazing trip with Aggrey I recently completed my Kilimanjaro Ascent with Kilimanjaro Bound, and it was truly the experience of a lifetime. This was a solo trip for me, and from beginning to end, everything was seamless, well-organized, and filled with moments I will never forget. A very special thanks to my guide, Aggrey. He was absolutely outstanding—professional, knowledgeable, and incredibly supportive throughout the climb. From setting the right pace to keeping the atmosphere positive and safe, he made the journey not just successful, but deeply enjoyable. I couldn’t have asked for a better guide to accompany me on this adventure. Climbing Kilimanjaro had always been a dream, and with Kilimanjaro Bound (and Aggrey by my side), it turned into a reality far beyond expectations. I felt cared for, encouraged, and inspired every step of the way. ✨ If you’re planning to climb Kilimanjaro, I wholeheartedly recommend Kilimanjaro Bound—their professionalism and personal touch make all the difference.

Highly recommend! Fantastic experience climbing Mt Meru with Kilimanjaro Bound We had a truly unforgettable climb up Mount Meru, thanks to our fantastic guides, Aggrey and Samson! From start to finish, the entire team was exceptional. Aggrey and Samson went above and beyond to make sure we were well-prepared, informed, and comfortable throughout the journey. Not only did they guide us with professionalism and care, but they also shared fascinating information about the mountain, its surroundings, and the route—making the experience even more enriching. Most importantly, they always prioritized our safety and comfort, which allowed us to fully enjoy every moment of the climb. The meals on the trek were also delicious, exactly just what we needed to stay energized. A heartfelt thank you to the whole team, especially Aggrey and Samson, for making this adventure so special. We appreciate everything you did for us!
