The 6-day Rongai Route is a remote, northern approach to Kilimanjaro, often considered one of the easiest and least crowded routes. Starting near the Kenyan border, it passes through varied terrain with high success rates (approx. 84%). The trek features a gentle, consistent gradient, with the descent via the busier Marangu route.
Duration: 6 Days / 5 Nights on the mountain (plus arrival/departure days).
Distance: Approximately 65 km (40 miles). This route starts at the Nalemuru Gate near the Kenyan border and descends via the Marangu Route on the southeast side.
Difficulty: Moderate. It is famous for having the gentlest gradient of all Kilimanjaro routes. However, the 6-day version is physically demanding because it lacks the “climb high, sleep low” opportunities found on Lemosho, making the short acclimatization window the primary challenge.
Scenery: Beautiful and Remote. It offers a unique perspective from the north, passing through true wilderness and offering views of the Kenyan plains. While it lacks the lush rainforest variety of the western routes, it features stunning views of the jagged Mawenzi peak.
Traffic: Low. This is one of the quietest routes on the mountain. You will experience significant solitude until the final days when the trail merges with the Marangu Route for the summit push.
Summit Success Rate: Approximately 65-70%. While the trail itself is easier underfoot, the 6-day itinerary has a lower success rate than the 7-day Rongai because hikers have one less day to adjust to the altitude before the final ascent.
Arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO): Upon arrival, you will be warmly greeted by your designated trekking operator representative. Look for a sign with your name.
Transfer to Moshi: Enjoy a comfortable transfer to your pre-booked hotel in the bustling town of Moshi. The journey typically takes 1-2 hours depending on the location of your hotel.
Meet Your Kilimanjaro Mountain guide: In the afternoon or evening, you will meet your experienced head guide for a comprehensive pre-trek briefing. This crucial session will cover essential details about the Rongai route, daily schedules, safety protocols, altitude sickness awareness, and what to expect during the climb. Feel free to ask any questions you may have.
Kilimanjaro Equipment Check: Your guide will conduct a thorough check of your trekking gear to ensure you have all the necessary equipment in good working order. This is an excellent opportunity to identify any missing or unsuitable items, which can often be rented locally.
Relax and Prepare: Spend the rest of the day relaxing, organizing your gear, and mentally preparing for the adventure ahead. Ensure you stay hydrated and get a good night’s sleep.
Accommodation: Comfortable hotel in Moshi (Breakfast included)
Morning Transfer: After a hearty breakfast at your hotel, you will embark on a scenic drive to the Rongai trailhead at Nalemoru Gate. This journey typically takes 2-3 hours and offers glimpses of local villages and the surrounding landscape.
Registration at Rongai Gate: Upon arrival at the gate, your guide will handle the necessary registration procedures with the Kilimanjaro National Park authorities.
Commence the Trek: Your Kilimanjaro adventure officially begins! The initial part of the trek meanders through cultivated farmland before gradually entering a captivating montane forest. Keep your eyes peeled for wildlife such as the distinctive black and white Colobus monkeys swinging through the trees. With luck, you might even spot signs of larger mammals like elephants or buffalo from a safe distance, as this side of the mountain is less disturbed.
Gentle Ascent: The trail is relatively gentle today, allowing your body to begin adjusting to the altitude. Enjoy the sights and sounds of the forest environment.
Arrival at Simba Camp: After approximately 4-5 hours of trekking, you will reach Simba Camp, nestled at the edge of the moorland zone. This campsite offers fantastic panoramic views stretching across the Kenyan plains below.
Camp Setup and Dinner: Your dedicated team of porters will have already set up camp upon your arrival. Settle into your tent and enjoy a hot, freshly prepared dinner by your talented cook.
Evening Briefing: Your guide will provide a briefing for the next day’s trek.
Hydration and Rest: Drink plenty of fluids and get a good night’s rest in preparation for the following day’s ascent.

Morning Trek: After a nourishing breakfast, your trek continues with a steady ascent into the open moorland zone. The vegetation begins to change, characterized by hardy grasses, low shrubs, and giant heathers.
Spectacular Views of Kibo: On a clear morning, you will be rewarded with breathtaking views of Kibo peak, the majestic summit of Kilimanjaro, including the impressive eastern ice fields glistening on the crater rim. Capture these unforgettable moments with your camera.
Passing Second Cave: The trail passes by the landmark known as Second Cave, a notable rock shelter where you may stop for a well-deserved break and enjoy your packed lunch amidst the stunning scenery.
Heading towards Mawenzi: After lunch, the route diverges from the main trail, following a smaller path that heads towards the dramatic and jagged peaks of Mawenzi, the second highest of Kilimanjaro’s three volcanic cones.
Arrival at Kikelelwa Camp: Your destination for today is Kikelelwa Camp, beautifully situated in a sheltered valley near the intriguing Kikelewa caves. This quieter campsite offers a sense of remoteness and tranquility.
Camp Life: Settle into your camp, enjoy the peaceful surroundings, and savor another delicious dinner prepared by your cook.
Acclimatization: The higher altitude today plays a crucial role in your acclimatization process. Take it easy and listen to your body.

Shorter but Steeper Hike: Today’s trek is shorter in distance but involves a steeper ascent as you continue your journey towards the alpine desert zone. The vegetation becomes increasingly sparse as you gain altitude.
Close-Up Views of Mawenzi: Prepare to be awestruck by the incredibly close and impressive views of Mawenzi peak. The rugged and dramatic formations of this volcanic cone provide a stunning backdrop to your hike.
Reaching Mawenzi Tarn Camp: After approximately 3-4 hours of trekking, you will arrive at the spectacular Mawenzi Tarn Camp. This campsite is uniquely located in a cirque directly beneath the towering spires of Mawenzi, with a picturesque tarn (small mountain lake) adding to the beauty of the setting.
Acclimatization Hike (Optional): In the afternoon, you have the option of taking a short acclimatization hike around the tarn and exploring the surrounding area. This gentle activity helps your body further adapt to the higher altitude and offers fantastic photo opportunities.
Rest and Hydration: Spend the rest of the afternoon resting, staying hydrated, and enjoying the breathtaking scenery.
Evening Preparations: Your guide will provide a detailed briefing about the following day’s trek to Kibo Hut and the crucial summit night.

Leaving Mawenzi Tarn: After breakfast, you will bid farewell to the stunning Mawenzi Tarn area and begin your trek across the vast and surreal “Saddle,” a high-altitude desert plateau that stretches between the imposing peaks of Kibo and Mawenzi.
Lunar-Like Terrain: The landscape today is characterized by a barren, lunar-like terrain with sparse vegetation. The walking is generally on relatively flat and easy ground, but the high altitude makes the effort feel more significant.
Views of Kibo Ahead: Enjoy panoramic views of the expansive landscape and the impressive Kibo summit looming ahead, providing a constant reminder of your ultimate goal.
Arrival at Kibo Hut: After approximately 5-6 hours of trekking, you will reach Kibo Hut. This is a basic stone structure with limited facilities, serving as the final stop before the summit attempt.
Rest and Preparation: The afternoon is dedicated to resting, conserving energy, and making final preparations for the challenging summit night. Ensure all your layers of clothing, headlamp, and water are readily accessible.
Summit Briefing: Your guide will conduct a crucial and detailed briefing about the summit climb, including the route, pace, estimated time, and safety procedures.
Early Dinner and Rest: Dinner will be served early to allow for maximum rest before the midnight wake-up call. Try to get some sleep, even if it’s just a few hours.

Midnight Wake-Up: You will be gently awakened around midnight with a hot drink and a light snack to fuel your summit push.
The Ascent Begins: Under the cover of darkness, illuminated by your headlamp, you will begin the challenging ascent to the summit. The initial section involves a rocky path, gradually ascending towards Hans Meyer Cave (5,150m/16,900ft).
Steeper Sections: The trail becomes progressively steeper as you continue towards Gilman’s Point (5,685 m / 18,652 ft), located on the crater rim. This is often considered the most physically demanding part of the entire trek due to the steep incline and high altitude.
Along the Crater Rim: Upon reaching Gilman’s Point, you will be rewarded with a sense of accomplishment and potentially a stunning sunrise over Mawenzi. The trail then flattens slightly as you traverse along the crater rim for approximately 1-2 hours towards Uhuru Peak (5,895 m / 19,341 ft), the highest point in Africa and the “Roof of Africa.”
Reaching Uhuru Peak: Congratulations! You have reached the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro! Take some time to soak in the breathtaking panoramic views, capture this momentous occasion with photographs, and celebrate your incredible achievement. Be mindful of the altitude and limit your time at the summit.
Descent to Kibo Hut: Begin your descent back down to Kibo Hut. This can be surprisingly challenging on tired legs.
Rest and Refuel at Kibo Hut: Upon reaching Kibo Hut, you will take a well-deserved break, enjoy some refreshments, and collect any remaining belongings.
Continue Descent to Horombo Hut: After resting, you will continue your descent down to Horombo Hut (3,720 m / 12,205 ft), located in the more oxygen-rich moorland zone. This longer descent can be tiring, but the lower altitude will make breathing significantly easier.
Arrival at Horombo Hut: You will be welcomed at Horombo Hut with a hot and satisfying dinner. This is a time to relax, share your summit stories, and appreciate the accomplishment.

Everything you need to know about what makes this route special
While less steep, it is still physically demanding, especially on summit night.
Offers diverse, scenic views from forests to alpine deserts and glaciers.
The starting point is far from Moshi, resulting in higher transportation costs.
Although 6 days works, a 7-day option with an extra night at Mawenzi Tarn is sometimes recommended.
Choose the best season for your Mount Kilimanjaro Climbing adventure
Clear & Warm
21–27°C base / -7 to -29°C summit
High
Premium
The warmest months on the mountain, with excellent visibility. Expect generally clear skies in the mornings and evenings; clouds may appear during the day with occasional brief showers.
Clear & Cold
15–20°C base / -10 to -20°C summit
Very High
Premium
The probability of rain is minimal, skies are mostly clear, and the visibility is unparalleled. July and August are the busiest months on the mountain, with crowds thinning in September and even more so in October.
Variable — occasional showers
18–25°C base / -10 to -20°C summit
Low to Moderate
Standard
Early October is still stable, but by November, less stable weather patterns can bring rain every day for a short period. March begins with a short dry window, but by mid-March the long rains begin.
"Pole Pole": This is Swahili for "Slowly, slowly." Even if you feel strong, moving slowly is the best way to prevent altitude sickness.
Hydrate: Aim for 3–4 liters of water per day.
Gaiters & Poles: Essential for the descent on Day 6, which can be steep and hard on the knees.
Summit Night: Climbers typically wake around 23:30 for a steep, rocky, and challenging ascent to Gilman’s Point (5,681m) before reaching the summit.
It is considered moderately difficult. While the terrain is gentler than the Machame or Umbwe routes, the 6-day version is tougher than the 7-day because it skips an acclimatization day at Mawenzi Tarn. This means you reach high altitudes faster, which can increase the risk of altitude sickness.
While it doesn’t have the lush variety of the Lemosho route, it offers “true wilderness.” You get unique views of the North face and the jagged Mawenzi Peak. You also descend via the Marangu route, so you see two different sides of the mountain.
Because the North side of the mountain receives less rainfall, the Rongai route is the best choice during the wet seasons (April–May and November). However, the prime months are:
Yes. Kilimanjaro’s weather systems mostly come from the South and East. The North (Rongai) is in a “rain shadow,” meaning you are much more likely to have a dry trek even when other routes are muddy.
No. Unlike the Marangu route, the Rongai route is a camping route. You will sleep in high-quality mountain tents set up by your porters each day.

Real experiences from real adventures who’ve explored Tanzania with us
Posted on Tripadvisor Victoria BVerified To the Uhuru Peak and back I summited Uhuru Peak in February 2026 via the 7-day Lemosho route. Kilimanjaro Bound was recommended to me by friends who had summited Mt. Kilimanjaro in 2021. The company accommodated my request on just three weeks’ notice. On the pre-trek day, I met my guide for a briefing about the ascent itinerary and the rental gear I would need. The ascent crew consisted of eight people who supported my daily needs throughout the adventure. My guide, Aggrey, was punctual, tactful, and patient. He was responsive to my requests, encouraging when needed, and knowledgeable about the wildlife and culture of Tanzania and other African countries. Aggrey was just the perfect guide for me - both in personality and in the mental support he provided throughout this challenging experience. My chef, Eli, prepared delicious meals, including fresh salads, fruits, and crepes with fruit jam which were my favorite. Kelvin was the first person I saw every morning, bringing me wash water and hot tea, and the last one to wrap up the day the same way. I also appreciated the hard work of the rest of the team—Colin, Gift, Baraka, Samson, and Michael—who carried our gear from camp to camp, brought fresh water from mountain streams, and maintained the portable toilet. They even met me halfway on the most challenging sections of the route (Lava Tower and the descent from Uhuru Peak, in my case) and helped me make it back to camp when I was super exhausted. Tips / What I wish I had done differently: I wish I had brought beef jerky or other dried meat/fish snacks, as meals from day 3 or 4 onward did not include meat due to limited storage capabilities for fresh meat products on a long trek. I wish I had taken a daytime nap or gotten more sleep before summit night (“push night”), as lack of sleep combined with high altitude made me very drowsy during the final ascent and made it more challenging.Posted on Tripadvisor nhoxseyVerified An Unforgettable Experience – We All Summited Climbing Kilimanjaro with Kilimanjaro Bound was truly life-changing. We did the 6-day Marangu route with a small group of four, and every one of us reached the summit—something I credit directly to the incredible support we received on the mountain. Our main guide, Aggrey, was exceptional. His calm leadership, constant encouragement, and attention to how each of us was feeling made all the difference, especially on summit night. When things got hard, he never let us doubt ourselves. Reaching the summit together was emotional, humbling, and unforgettable. Kilimanjaro Bound doesn’t just guide climbs—they take care of people. I can’t recommend them highly enough.Posted on Tripadvisor Voyager34723588914Verified Best experience ever with Kilimanjaro Bound!! I just finished 6 days on the Marangu route to Mt Kili, could not have done it without this amazing crew! All 4 in our group reached the summit!. Our guides, cook, porters, everyone worked so hard to make this experience happen. Everything was organized, great communication, we learned so much about the country, history, culture, wildlife, terrain. I can not say enough praise about this group, I’ve never seen such hard work, positive attitudes, and big smiles. You can tell they love what they are doing and care about their clients. It is truly one of the hardest things I’ve done and once in a lifetime experience. Thank you all for making it happen!!Posted on Tripadvisor Bello AVerified A great day hike to Mandara hut I travelled solo with Kilimanjaro Bound for a day hike to the Mandara Hut. It was truly amazing and great experience. Mr Aggrey, my guide, is very experienced and knowledgeable. He made the trip enjoyable. I plan in 2027 to hike to the top of Kilimanjaro with KB. Thanks Aggrey for the great trip. Bello A.Posted on Tripadvisor Culture38030224023Verified ????️⭐️Amazing trip with Aggrey I recently completed my Kilimanjaro Ascent with Kilimanjaro Bound, and it was truly the experience of a lifetime. This was a solo trip for me, and from beginning to end, everything was seamless, well-organized, and filled with moments I will never forget. A very special thanks to my guide, Aggrey. He was absolutely outstanding—professional, knowledgeable, and incredibly supportive throughout the climb. From setting the right pace to keeping the atmosphere positive and safe, he made the journey not just successful, but deeply enjoyable. I couldn’t have asked for a better guide to accompany me on this adventure. Climbing Kilimanjaro had always been a dream, and with Kilimanjaro Bound (and Aggrey by my side), it turned into a reality far beyond expectations. I felt cared for, encouraged, and inspired every step of the way. ✨ If you’re planning to climb Kilimanjaro, I wholeheartedly recommend Kilimanjaro Bound—their professionalism and personal touch make all the difference. Posted on Tripadvisor Coastal56174512358Verified Thank you! Last November, I climbed to the summit of Kilimanjaro by bicycle. It was an amazing experience and an incredible challenge. I would like to express my deepest gratitude to all of my crew members.Posted on Tripadvisor Livia DVerified Highly recommend! Fantastic experience climbing Mt Meru with Kilimanjaro Bound We had a truly unforgettable climb up Mount Meru, thanks to our fantastic guides, Aggrey and Samson! From start to finish, the entire team was exceptional. Aggrey and Samson went above and beyond to make sure we were well-prepared, informed, and comfortable throughout the journey. Not only did they guide us with professionalism and care, but they also shared fascinating information about the mountain, its surroundings, and the route—making the experience even more enriching. Most importantly, they always prioritized our safety and comfort, which allowed us to fully enjoy every moment of the climb. The meals on the trek were also delicious, exactly just what we needed to stay energized. A heartfelt thank you to the whole team, especially Aggrey and Samson, for making this adventure so special. We appreciate everything you did for us!Posted on Tripadvisor Radek PVerified Recommended! Two days ago I just finished climb to Kilimanjaro. It was successfull mainly because of the attitude of the whole team from Kilimanjaro bound. All the provided service were incredible. Food was amazing and overall experience is unforgettable.
