Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Is it safe to sleep in a tent with wild animals around?

Yes, but with rules. Most campsites in national parks like the Serengeti are “unfenced.” This means a hyena or elephant might wander past your tent at night.

  • The Secret: Animals view a tent as a solid object (like a bush or a rock) and generally ignore it as long as there is no food inside.
  • Golden Rule: Never keep snacks, fruit, or even scented toiletries in your tent. Use a headlamp at night and never walk away from the camp area after dark without a guide.

Typically, these safaris are “all-inclusive” once you leave the city (Arusha).

  • Included: Professional driver-guide, a private chef, all meals (3x day), park fees, camping gear (tents, mattresses), and a 4×4 vehicle with a pop-up roof.
  • Excluded: Sleeping bags (often for rent), tips, soda/alcohol, and your personal travel insurance.

Space in a safari jeep is limited, so soft-sided duffel bags are a must (hard suitcases are a nightmare to pack).

  • Clothing: Neutral colors (khaki, beige, olive). Avoid bright whites (gets dusty) and dark blue/black (attracts Tsetse flies).
  • Layers: It is freezing on the Ngorongoro rim at night but 30°C (86°F) in the Serengeti by noon.
  • Power: Bring a high-capacity power bank. Most jeeps have charging ports, but they only work while the engine is running.

Tipping is a standard part of safari culture in 2026.

  • Driver-Guide: $20 – $30 USD per vehicle, per day.
  • Chef: $15 – $20 USD per vehicle, per day. (These costs are usually split between everyone in the car.)
