6-day Machame Route

  • Machame Route
  • 6 Days
  • Challenging
  • Summit Success Rate: Approximately 70-75%

Tour Overview

The 6-day Machame Route is a popular and scenic trek on Mount Kilimanjaro, nicknamed the “Whiskey Route,” with a higher success rate than shorter climbs due to better acclimatization. The itinerary involves trekking through rainforests, moorlands, and alpine deserts, including the challenging Barranco Wall, to summit Uhuru Peak. The 6-day version typically combines two days of the longer itinerary to make the climb more challenging but is still considered achievable for physically fit individuals.

Summary

Why Choose 6-day Machame Route

  • Duration: 6 Days / 5 Nights on the mountain.
  • Distance: Approximately 62 km (37 miles).
  • Difficulty: Very High. This is a grueling trek. By skipping a night of rest, you are essentially combining two stages into one right before the summit attempt.
  • Scenery: Exceptional. You still experience the “Whiskey Route” highlights: the dense rainforest, the Shira Plateau, and the Barranco Wall.
  • Traffic: High. As one of the most popular paths on Kilimanjaro, expect busy campsites and trails.
  • Summit Success Rate: Approximately 70-75%. The success rate drops compared to the 7-day version because hikers have 24 hours less to adapt to the thin air before the final ascent.

Shira 1 Camp

Shira 1 Camp is a scenic campsite located on the expansive Shira Plateau on Mount Kilimanjaro. Situated at approximately 3,500 meters (11,483 feet) above sea level, the camp is commonly used by trekkers following the Lemosho and Shira routes. It marks the transition from the rainforest and moorland zones into the open alpine environment of the mountain.

The camp sits on one of Kilimanjaro’s oldest volcanic formations, offering wide-open landscapes and spectacular panoramic views. Unlike the forested camps lower on the mountain, Shira 1 Camp features open grasslands, volcanic rock formations, and sparse vegetation adapted to the harsher mountain climate. The area provides clear views of Kibo Peak and the surrounding plains stretching toward western Tanzania.

Trekkers reaching Shira 1 Camp often notice the effects of higher altitude for the first time, making the camp an important acclimatization stop during the climb. The route leading to the camp is less steep than many other sections of the mountain, allowing climbers to gradually gain elevation while enjoying the unique scenery of the Shira Plateau.

Accommodation at Shira 1 Camp is entirely tent-based, with camping areas spread across the plateau. Facilities are basic and include toilets and ranger stations. Nights at the camp are usually colder and windier than those at lower camps due to the open landscape and higher elevation. However, the clear skies often provide excellent opportunities for stargazing and photography.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

How difficult is the 6-day route?

It is considered Challenging to Difficult. While the trail itself is beautiful, the 6-day schedule is physically taxing. You will be walking for 18–24 hours between Day 4 and Day 5 with only a 3–4 hour nap in between.

Statistically, the success rate for the 6-day Machame is lower than the 7-day version:

6-Day: ~70% – 75%

7-Day: ~85% – 90% The extra day in the 7-day version (usually spent at Karanga Camp) provides critical recovery and red blood cell production time.

No. Kilimanjaro is a “walk-up” mountain. However, you will encounter the Barranco Wall on Day 4. It requires some “scrambling” (using your hands for balance), but it does not require ropes or harnesses. It’s often the most fun part of the trip!

Best (Dry): Late June to October or January to March.

Avoid (Wet): April, May, and November. The 6-day schedule is brutal enough without mud and rain slowing you down.

It was traditionally considered tougher and more expensive than the Marangu (“Coca-Cola”) route. While modern gear and guides have leveled the playing field, the nickname stuck to signify its rugged, adventurous nature.
