Tour Overview

The 5-Day Rongai Route offers an exclusive approach to the roof of Africa, ascending Mount Kilimanjaro (5,895 meters / 19,341 feet) from its pristine northern flank near the Tanzanian-Kenyan border. Known for its wild, uncrowded trails, low rainfall, and gentle slope progression, the Rongai Route provides a distinct wilderness experience compared to southern trails.

Starting at Nalemoru Gate (1,950m), the trail traverses diverse climatic zones—from lush pine forests and heather moorlands to alpine deserts and glacial summits—before joining the main crater path at Kibo Hut for the final midnight summit push to Uhuru Peak. Descent takes place via the Marangu Route on the southern slope, giving trekkers a full 360-degree scenic cross-section of Mount Kilimanjaro.

Day 1

Rongai Gate to Simba Camp

Your expedition begins with a scenic drive from Moshi or Arusha through rural Chagga villages to Nalemoru Gate near the Kenyan border. After completing national park registration formalities and meeting your mountain guide crew, the trek starts along a wide trail winding through timber forests and farmlands of maize and potatoes.

As you move higher, the cultivated land gives way to natural evergreen pine forest and moss-draped montane woods. Keep a close eye out for black-and-white Colobus monkeys swinging through the canopy. The trail ascends gently without steep sections, allowing you to establish a comfortable walking pace (Pole Pole—slowly in Swahili). By late afternoon, you reach Simba Camp, positioned right at the edge of the heather and moorland zone, offering expansive views out over the Kenyan plains below.

Day 2

Simba Camp to Second Cave to Third Cave Camp

After an early breakfast, the trail leaves the remaining forest canopy behind and climbs steadily into open moorland characterized by giant heather, rock outcrops, and unique volcanic flora. As you gain elevation, clear views of Kibo’s massive snow-capped dome begin to dominate the horizon ahead.

The morning hike leads to Second Cave (3,450m), where you pause for a hot, freshly prepared lunch while enjoying views across the semi-arid landscape. Following lunch, the trail veers toward the high moorland basin, leading across dry water channels toward Third Cave Camp. The air becomes noticeably cooler and thinner as you reach 3,800 meters. The evening at Third Cave is spent resting, hydrating, and acclimatizing to the sub-alpine air.

Day 3

Third Cave Camp to Kibo Hut

You leave Third Cave behind to cross the expanse known as “The Saddle”—a high-altitude desert plain stretching between the twin volcanic cones of Mawenzi and Kibo. The environment shifts dramatically into a stark, lunar landscape devoid of vegetation, where freezing winds sweep across open volcanic scree.

The ascent is steady and methodical, reinforcing the vital Pole Pole rhythm. Upon arriving at Kibo Hut by early afternoon, your mountain crew will set up camp and prepare a high-carbohydrate early dinner. Guides conduct standard pulse-oximeter health checks, inspect gear, and conduct a detailed summit briefing. You will turn in to sleep by 6:00 PM to prepare for the midnight summit push.

Day 4

Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak (Summit) to Horombo Hut

Your summit attempt begins around midnight under a starlit sky. Dressed in full arctic gear, you begin navigating the steep scree switchbacks leading up the side of Kibo cone. The initial goal is Hans Meyer Cave (5,150m), where you pause briefly for warm tea.

The trail steepens significantly on the loose scree path toward Gillman’s Point (5,685m) on the crater rim. Reaching Gillman’s Point around sunrise rewards you with views across the crater glaciers and the surrounding African continent below. From Gillman’s, you continue along the snow-draped crater rim for another 1 to 1.5 hours to reach Uhuru Peak (5,895m)—the highest point in Africa.

After taking summit photographs and celebrating your achievement, you begin the steep descent back down to Kibo Hut for a short rest and warm meal. You then pack your remaining gear and continue descending through the alpine desert down to Horombo Hut for a well-earned dinner and sleep.

Day 5

Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate to Moshi/Arusha

Wake up to a final mountain breakfast followed by the traditional tipping and singing ceremony, where your mountain guides, chefs, and porters perform the famous “Kilimanjaro Song”.

You descend through Mandara Hut and down through the rainforest section of the Marangu Route. The trail can be slippery, so trekking poles are recommended. Upon reaching Marangu Gate, you sign the official national park register. Climbers who reached Gillman’s Point receive a Green Certificate, while those who reached Uhuru Peak receive a Gold Certificate. After a farewell lunch with your crew, you are transferred back to your hotel in Moshi for a shower and celebration.

The trail to Simba Camp passes through farmland, pine forest, and moorland vegetation before opening into scenic mountain landscapes. The camp provides beautiful views of the Kenyan plains and the surrounding northern slopes of Kilimanjaro. Its gradual ascent makes it an ideal starting point for acclimatization.

Third Cave Camp

Third Cave Camp is a high-altitude campsite located on the northern side of Mount Kilimanjaro at approximately 3,870 meters (12,697 feet) above sea level. The camp is primarily used by trekkers on the Rongai and Northern Circuit routes as they continue toward the summit area.

The camp is situated within the alpine desert zone, where vegetation becomes sparse and the landscape is dominated by rocky terrain and open mountain scenery. Climbers staying at Third Cave Camp enjoy impressive views of Mawenzi Peak and the surrounding northern slopes of Kilimanjaro. The peaceful setting and lower traffic compared to southern routes create a more remote mountain experience.

Third Cave Camp is an important acclimatization stop because climbers spend the night at a higher elevation before continuing toward Kibo Hut or School Hut. The thinner air and colder temperatures begin to challenge trekkers more noticeably, making proper rest and hydration especially important at this stage of the climb.

Accommodation consists of mountain tents arranged on rocky camping grounds. Temperatures at night can become very cold, especially during windy conditions. However, the clear skies and isolated setting provide excellent opportunities for mountain photography and stargazing.

Third Cave Camp Highlights

  • Located at approximately 3,870 meters altitude

Kibo Hut

Kibo Hut is a high-altitude mountain hut located on Mount Kilimanjaro at approximately 4,720 meters (15,485 feet) above sea level. It serves as the main summit camp for climbers using the Marangu Route and Rongai Route before their final ascent to Uhuru Peak.

The hut is situated in the alpine desert zone between the peaks of Kibo and Mawenzi. The surrounding landscape is harsh and rocky, with volcanic terrain, cold temperatures, and thin air creating a true high-mountain environment. Vegetation is almost nonexistent at this altitude, and conditions are often windy and extremely cold, especially during the night.

Climbers usually arrive at Kibo Hut in the afternoon, rest for a few hours, and begin their summit attempt around midnight. The camp plays a critical role in allowing trekkers to prepare physically and mentally for the demanding climb to Gilman’s Point and Uhuru Peak.

Accommodation at Kibo Hut consists of dormitory-style mountain huts with bunk beds and shared facilities. Despite the simple setup, the hut provides important shelter for climbers before the summit ascent.

Kibo Hut Highlights

  • Main summit camp on the Marangu Route
  • Located at approximately 4,720 meters altitude
  • Starting point for summit ascent to Uhuru Peak

Horombo Hut

Horombo Hut is a popular mountain hut located on the Marangu Route of Mount Kilimanjaro at approximately 3,720 meters (12,205 feet) above sea level. It serves as both an overnight stop and an important acclimatization point for climbers ascending and descending the mountain.

The hut is positioned within the moorland zone, surrounded by rolling hills, giant groundsels, and volcanic landscapes. The area offers beautiful views of both Kibo Peak and Mawenzi Peak, creating one of the most scenic overnight locations on the Marangu Route.

Many climbers spend an extra night at Horombo Hut for acclimatization before continuing toward Kibo Hut. The gradual adjustment to altitude helps improve summit success rates while allowing trekkers time to rest and explore the surrounding landscape.

Accommodation at Horombo Hut includes dormitory-style sleeping huts with shared dining and bathroom facilities. The camp is larger and more social than many other Kilimanjaro camps due to the number of trekkers using the Marangu Route.

  • Important acclimatization stop for climbers
  • Scenic views of Kibo and Mawenzi peaks

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Is the 5-day Rongai route suitable for beginners?

While non-technical, the 5-day option moves quickly without an extra acclimatization day. Beginners with strong physical fitness can succeed, but those with limited high-altitude experience should consider the 6 or 7-day itinerary for better acclimatization.

The trek starts at Nalemoru Gate on the northern side of Kilimanjaro near the Kenyan border and finishes at Marangu Gate on the southeastern side.

Professional mountain chefs prepare fresh, hot, high-energy meals daily. Meals feature complex carbohydrates, fresh vegetables, meat/vegetarian protein options, hot soups, and hot beverages. Dietary restrictions (vegan, gluten-free, halal, kosher) are catered to upon request.
