Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

When is the best time to go?
  • June to October (Dry Season): Best for general wildlife viewing as animals gather around water holes. This is also when the Great Migration is in the Northern Serengeti.
  • January to March: Great for seeing the calving season in the Southern Serengeti.
  • April to May: The “long rains.” Many camps close, but prices are lower and the landscape is lush.

In Tanzania, budget camping typically involves:

  • Tents: 2-person “dome” tents with mattresses on the ground (some providers offer pillows).
  • Facilities: Public campsites with shared bathrooms (toilets and showers). Hot water is not always guaranteed.
  • Food: You travel with a private chef who prepares all meals (breakfast, picnic lunch, and hot dinner).
  • Power: Charging is usually done via the 4×4 vehicle’s inverter during game drives.

Yes, if you follow the rules. Campsites in the Serengeti and Ngorongoro are unfenced. Animals (hyenas, elephants, or even lions) may wander through.

  • Never keep food or scented toiletries (like toothpaste) inside your tent.
  • Do not leave your tent at night without a flashlight and a quick scan of your surroundings.
  • Clothing: Neutral colors (khaki, beige, olive). Avoid blue and black, as they attract Tsetse flies.
  • Warmth: A fleece or light down jacket. Mornings in the Ngorongoro Crater can be surprisingly cold (near freezing).
  • Gear: A high-quality headlamp, power bank, and 8×42 binoculars.
  • Health: DEET-based insect repellent and a small personal first-aid kit.
  • Visa: Most nationalities need a visa ($50 for most, $100 for US citizens). You can get this online (e-Visa) or on arrival.
  • Vaccinations: Yellow Fever is required if you are traveling from a country with a risk of transmission. Malaria prophylaxis is highly recommended.

Tipping is a standard part of safari culture in Tanzania:

  • Safari Guide: $15 – $20 USD per group, per day.
  • Safari Chef: $10 – $15 USD per group, per day.

Note: Tanzania has a strict ban on single-use plastic bags. Ensure your luggage and toiletries are in reusable cloth or mesh bags.
