  • Lemosho Route
  • 9 Days
  • Challenging
  • Summit Success Rate: 90–95%.

Tour Overview

The 9-day Lemosho route with Crater Camp is an elite, highly scenic, and acclimatization-focused Kilimanjaro itinerary that offers one of the highest summit success rates. It combines the lush, remote western approach of the Lemosho trail with a unique, overnight stay at Crater Camp (approx. 5,750m/18,865ft), nestled near the Furtwangler Glacier, allowing for a short summit hike to Uhuru Peak.

Summary

Why Choose Kilimanjaro Crater Camp: 9-Day Lemosho Crater Camp Route

The 9-day Lemosho route with Crater Camp itinerary is a premier, high-success-rate Kilimanjaro itinerary (approx. 5,895m) designed for superior acclimatization, featuring an overnight stay at 18,865ft (5,750m). Starting from the west at Londorossi Gate, it traverses the Shira Plateau, crosses the Barranco Wall, and spends a night inside the Reusch Crater before descending.

Unlike the standard routes where you “touch” the summit and immediately descend, this route allows you to:

  • Summit in Daylight: You typically reach Uhuru Peak in the afternoon, avoiding the midnight “zombie march” in the dark.
  • Explore the Inner Void: You can hike to the Ash Pit, a perfectly formed volcanic vent within the crater.
  • Witness Sunset & Sunrise: You get to see the sun set and rise from the highest point in Africa—an experience very few climbers ever have.

Situated at approximately 3,500 meters (11,483 feet) above sea level, the camp is commonly used by trekkers following the Lemosho and Shira routes. It marks the transition from the rainforest and moorland zones into the open alpine environment of the mountain.

Barafu Camp

Barafu Camp is one of the main summit camps on Mount Kilimanjaro, located at approximately 4,673 meters (15,331 feet) above sea level. The camp is used by climbers on the Machame, Lemosho, Umbwe, and Southern Circuit routes before their final ascent to Uhuru Peak.

The camp is situated in a harsh alpine desert environment with rocky terrain, steep slopes, and strong winds. The name “Barafu” means “ice” in Swahili, reflecting the cold conditions experienced at this altitude. Climbers usually arrive in the afternoon, rest briefly, and begin their summit attempt around midnight.

Accommodation at Barafu Camp consists of mountain tents placed on rocky ground. Despite the challenging environment, the camp provides spectacular views of glaciers, surrounding peaks, and dramatic mountain landscapes.

Key Features

Everything you need to know about what makes this route special

Ultimate Acclimatization

The 9-day itinerary is the safest way to climb. By spending nine days on the mountain, your body adapts to the thinning air far more effectively than on shorter routes. The addition of a night at Crater Camp (5,729m) means you aren’t rushing your descent after reaching the summit, allowing for a more gradual physiological adjustment.

The Crater Camp Experience

Unlike standard routes, you don’t just "touch" the summit and leave. You sleep inside the volcanic crater near the Furtwängler Glacier. This offers a surreal, lunar-like landscape and the chance to explore the "Ash Pit" before a much shorter, sunrise push to Uhuru Peak the following morning.

Diverse Scenery & Wildlife

The Lemosho route is the most scenic path up the mountain. You’ll traverse five distinct ecological zones:
• Rainforest: Spot Colobus monkeys near the Lemosho glades.
• Heath/Moorland: Cross the vast, stunning Shira Plateau.
• High Desert: Pass the iconic Lava Tower.
• Arctic Zone: Experience the glaciers and the inner crater.

Fitness & Physical Demand

While still non-technical, the 9-day trek is an endurance feat. The "Crater Night" is physically taxing due to the extreme altitude of the campsite. You should prioritize stair climbing, weighted pack hikes, and zone 2 cardio in your training months.

Elite Support Team

Because of the logistics of camping at nearly 19,000 feet, your crew will be larger. Expert guides trained specifically in High Altitude Pulmonary/Cerebral Edema (HAPE/HACE) detection are vital, as sleeping at the crater carries higher risks than sleeping at lower camps.

Health & Oxygen

Consult your doctor about Acetazolamide (Diamox). For Crater Camp treks, many reputable operators carry supplemental oxygen not just for emergencies, but to ensure safety during the overnight stay at extreme altitude.

Specialized Travel Insurance

Standard travel insurance often caps out at 4,000m or 5,000m. You must verify that your policy covers trekking up to 6,000 meters and includes helicopter evacuation from the mountain.

Pro Tip

How much does Kilimanjaro Lemosho route 9-day with cratercamp cost?

The cost of an 9-day Lemosho Route climb on Kilimanjaro typically ranges from $1,998 to $2,687 + per person depending on the level of service (Standard or luxury climb) and group size or private climb.

Important Notes

Sleeping in the Crater is physically demanding due to the extreme cold and thin air. It’s the ultimate “bucket list” version of Kilimanjaro for those who want the full geological experience.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

When is the Best Time to Climb the Lemosho Route 9 days with Crater Camp?

The best time to climb the Lemosho Route with Crater Camp is during the dry seasons, which are:

  • January to March
  • June to August

These periods offer more stable weather with less rainfall and higher temperatures, making it easier to acclimatize and enjoy the climb. However, it’s important to note that weather can be unpredictable, so always be prepared for potential changes.

Here’s a breakdown of why these periods are ideal for Lemosho Route 9-Day with crater camp:

January to March: This is the peak tourist season due to favorable weather conditions. However, it can be crowded, so booking your trip in advance is essential.

June to August: This is a shoulder season with fewer crowds but still pleasant weather. It’s a great option if you prefer a quieter experience.

The 9-day version is the “gold standard” for safety. It gives your body extra time to adjust to the altitude before the final push. By the time you reach the Crater on Day 8, you’ve had 7 days of gradual ascent, which is why the success rate for this route is typically 95% to 98%.

It is surreal and desolate. You are sleeping just below the summit (Uhuru Peak) and right next to the Furtwängler Glacier.

  • The Pros: You get to explore the Ash Pit and unique ice formations without the summit crowds.
  • The Cons: It is extremely cold (often well below -10°C/14°F) and the thin air makes sleeping difficult.

It carries a higher risk than other camps. Most climbers “summit and descend” to lower altitudes immediately. Staying at the Crater means you remain at nearly 19,000 ft for 12+ hours.

Important: If you show symptoms of Severe AMS (Altitude Sickness) at Crater Camp, evacuation must happen immediately, often in the dark, which is much more difficult than a daytime descent.

This route is best for experienced hikers or those with high physical fitness. While the success rate is high, the “Crater” element requires mental toughness to handle the extreme cold and potential headaches while trying to rest.

Yes. Your standard Kilimanjaro kit needs to be high-spec:

  • Sleeping Bag: Rated for at least -20°C (-4°F).
  • Layers: A high-quality heavy down “summit jacket” is non-negotiable for the evening in the crater.
  • Hydration: Water bladders will freeze; bring insulated “cozies” or Nalgene bottles.

Yes. Most reputable operators will have a “Plan B.” If your guide determines your oxygen saturation is too low or your symptoms are too severe when you reach the summit, they will bypass the Crater Camp and lead you down to a safer, lower camp (like Barafu or Mweka) for the night.
