Starting Point

You will hike on the plateau itself, reaching elevations of around 3,700m – 3,872m (12,139ft – 12,703ft) if you go to a point like Cathedral Point.

Duration

The actual hiking portion is often around 4-6 hours (round-trip), but the entire day trip (including transfers from Moshi/Arusha) will take 8-12 hours due to the long drive to the western side of the mountain.

Difficulty

It’s considered moderate in terms of physical exertion, but the high altitude can be challenging. A slow pace is important to manage the thin air.

7:00 AM - 10:30 AM

Hotel pickup to Londorosi Gate

Your adventure starts with a scenic drive from your accommodation to the Londorossi Gate on the western side of Kilimanjaro. This journey takes you through lush agricultural areas and indigenous forests, offering a glimpse into local life.

10:30 AM - 11:00 AM

Gate Registration

At the Londorossi Gate, you’ll complete the necessary park registration and paperwork with your guide.

11:00 AM - 11:45 AM

Drive to the Trailhead

From the gate, you’ll continue by car on a rough track to the Morum Barrier, which is the official starting point for your hike.

11:45 AM - 2:00 PM

Hike to Shira Plateau

Begin your trek from the Morum Barrier, ascending through giant heather and moorland. The hike to the plateau takes approximately 2-3 hours and covers a distance of around 4 kilometers, with a moderate elevation gain from ~3,400 meters to ~3,700 meters.

2:00 PM - 3:00 PM

Lunch and Exploration

Arrive at the Shira Plateau. Take some time to soak in the incredible views, enjoy a packed picnic lunch, and explore the unique landscape. Your guide will share insights into the geological history and diverse ecosystems of the area.

Optional Extension: Cathedral Point: For those seeking an extra challenge and more stunning views, an optional 2-3 hour round-trip hike to Cathedral Point is available.

3:00 PM - 5:00 PM

Descent and Return

Hike back to the Morum Barrier, which typically takes a bit less time than the ascent (around 1-2 hours).

Drive back to Londorossi Gate to check out, and then be transported back to Kilimanjaro airport filled with memories of your Kilimanjaro adventure.
