The drive to Machame Gate takes about 45-60 minutes from Moshi, passing through local villages on the mountain’s lower slopes.

08:00AM

Arrival & RegistrationArrive at the Machame Gate (1,800m 5,905 ft).

08:30AM - 9:00AM

Start of the Trek

Begin the hike! The trail immediately enters the dense, misty Rainforest Zone.

09:00 - 13:00

Hiking Through the Rainforest

The path is often steep, winding, and can be muddy—trekking poles are highly recommended. Your guide will use the Swahili phrase “Pole Pole” (slowly, slowly) to maintain a steady, sustainable pace. The rainforest is a biological hotspot where you can expect to see: Giant ferns, moss-covered trees, and the possibility of spotting Black and White Colobus Monkeys.

Mid-Trek Water Break

Stop for a short rest, snacks, and water at a designated spot. The forest begins to thin, transitioning toward the Heath Zone (Moorland) as you gain altitude.

13:00

Lunch & Rest

Enjoy your packed lunch at Machame Camp. This is your chance to relax, hydrate, and capture photographs before starting the descent.

14:00PM

Begin Descent

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

How far will I actually hike?

You will cover approximately 11km (7 miles) total—5.5km up and 5.5km back down. You’ll gain about 1,200 meters in elevation, which is enough to feel the change in air pressure but usually not enough to trigger serious altitude sickness.

Yes. You cannot enter Kilimanjaro National Park alone. You must be accompanied by a licensed guide, and your entry fee (conservation fee) must be paid at the gate. Most hikers book this through a local tour operator who handles the transport and paperwork.

Even for a short trip, the mountain is unpredictable.

  • Footwear: Broken-in hiking boots with good grip (the trail is slippery!).
  • Clothing: Moisture-wicking layers. Avoid cotton. Bring a waterproof shell or poncho.
  • Gear: A daypack, 2–3 liters of water, and trekking poles (highly recommended for the descent).
  • Sun/Bug Protection: Sunscreen and insect repellent for the lower forest sections.

Likely not from the trail itself. Because you are deep in the rainforest for the duration of the hike, the dense canopy usually hides the Kibo peak. However, you will see exotic flora (like the Impatiens Kilimanjaro flower) and Colobus monkeys.

Expect humid and misty conditions. The Machame side of the mountain receives the most rainfall. Even if it’s sunny in Moshi or Arusha, it’s often raining in the forest zone.
