Machame Camp

Machame Camp is the first overnight camp on the Machame Route, one of the most popular routes on Mount Kilimanjaro. Located at approximately 3,000 meters (9,840 feet) above sea level, the camp is positioned just above the rainforest zone on the southwestern side of the mountain. It serves as an important acclimatization point and introduces climbers to the changing landscapes of Kilimanjaro.

The trek to Machame Camp begins at Machame Gate and passes through dense rainforest filled with tall trees, ferns, and moss-covered trails. As climbers gain elevation, the vegetation gradually becomes less dense, transitioning toward the moorland zone where the camp is located. The scenery around the camp features open landscapes, rolling hills, and panoramic views of Mount Meru on clear days.

Machame Camp is known for its lively atmosphere because it hosts climbers from different trekking groups beginning their summit journey. The camp is often busy during peak climbing seasons, creating a social environment where trekkers from around the world share experiences and excitement about the climb ahead. Evenings are usually cool and misty, with temperatures dropping significantly after sunset.

Accommodation at Machame Camp consists of mountain tents set up on designated camping grounds. Basic facilities include toilets and ranger stations, while trekking crews provide meals and camping support. The camp’s location at a higher altitude helps climbers begin adjusting to thinner air before continuing to higher camps such as Shira Camp.

Pro Tip

Even on a 2-day trek, you’ll likely have porters carrying your main bag. Keep your rain gear and camera in your daypack so you can reach them instantly!

Important Notes

Packing for a 2-day trek on the Machame route is a bit unique. Since the full Machame route usually takes 6–7 days to summit, a 2-day trip is typically a “taster” trek—you’ll likely hike from the Machame Gate to Machame Camp on Day 1, and then explore toward the Shira Plateau on Day 2 before descending.

Because you aren’t going to the arctic summit zone, you can skip the heavy-duty expedition gear (like -20°C sleeping bags or heavy down parkas), but you still need to prepare for rain and chilly mountain nights.

The “Big Three” Essentials

  • Daypack (25-35L): You’ll carry this yourself with water, snacks, and extra layers.
  • Hiking Boots: Must be broken in! The trail through the rainforest can be muddy and slippery.
  • Sleeping Bag: A 3-season bag (rated to about 0°C/32°F) is plenty for Machame Camp.

Clothing (The Layering System)

Avoid cotton at all costs—it stays wet and makes you cold. Stick to synthetic or merino wool.

  • Base Layer: 1 moisture-wicking T-shirt and 1 long-sleeve shirt.
  • Mid Layer: A fleece jacket or a light “puffy” down jacket for the evening.
  • Outer Layer: A high-quality waterproof rain jacket (the rainforest lives up to its name).
  • Bottoms: 1 pair of hiking trousers and a pair of waterproof over-trousers just in case.
  • Feet: 2 pairs of thermal hiking socks (merino wool is best).

Head & Hands

  • Sun Hat: The equatorial sun is brutal, even if it feels cool.
  • Warm Beanie: For the chilly night at camp.
  • Sunglasses: High UV protection.
  • Light Gloves: Optional, but nice for early morning starts.

Gear & Personal Items

  • Trekking Poles: Highly recommended for the descent to save your knees.
  • Headlamp: Essential for navigating camp at night.
  • Water Storage: A 2-3L hydration bladder (Camelbak) or sturdy bottles.
  • Power Bank: Cold air drains phone batteries faster than usual.
  • Toiletries: Wet wipes (your “mountain shower”), sunscreen, lip balm with SPF, and hand sanitizer.

Small Luxuries

  • High-Energy Snacks: Chocolate, nuts, or energy bars to supplement the provided meals.
  • Dry Bags: Put your spare clothes in Ziplocs or dry bags inside your pack to ensure they stay dry if it pours.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Can I reach the summit in 2 days?

No. It is physically and physiologically impossible for a standard trekker to summit and descend via the Machame Route in 48 hours. The summit is at 5,895m (19,341 ft), and attempting to climb that high from the gate (1,800m) in two days would lead to severe, life-threatening Altitude Sickness (HAPE or HACE).

Yes. You cannot enter Kilimanjaro National Park without:

  • A licensed mountain guide.
  • Paid park permits (Conservation fees, camping fees, and rescue fees).

It is considered moderate.

  • Day 1 is a steady climb through a humid rainforest. It can be muddy and slippery.
  • Day 2 is steeper as you leave the forest and enter the heath zone, but since you aren’t carrying a full summit pack and aren’t pushed to extreme altitudes, most people with average fitness find it very manageable.

Even for a short trip, the weather on Kilimanjaro is unpredictable. You will need:

  • Waterproof gear: A shell jacket and rain pants (the rainforest is famous for downpours).
  • Layers: It gets significantly colder at Machame Camp (2,835m) once the sun goes down.
  • Footwear: Broken-in hiking boots with good ankle support.
  • Daypack: For your water, snacks, and extra layers.

You might see the Machame Route referred to as the “Whiskey Route.” This nickname exists to contrast it with the Marangu Route (the “Coca-Cola Route”). While Marangu is considered “easier” because you sleep in huts, Machame is “tougher” (like whiskey) because you sleep in tents and the terrain is steeper
