Important Notes

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What is "budget camping" actually like?

You will stay in public campsites inside or near the parks. You’ll sleep in sturdy, waterproof two-person tents on foam mattresses. While “budget,” you aren’t exactly roughing it alone; you’ll have a professional safari chef who prepares three fresh meals a day.

Yes. Public campsites have communal blocks with toilets and showers. Note that “hot” water is a luxury and often depends on solar power or a wood-fired boiler—expect brisk showers more often than not!

Surprisingly, yes. Most campsites are unfenced, meaning animals (like zebras, buffalo, or even hyenas) may wander through at night. Your guide will give you a safety briefing, but the rule of thumb is simple: stay in your tent after dark, and never keep food inside your tent.

Most operators include tents and mattresses, but sleeping bags are often an add-on (approx. $20 for the trip). Check your contract; many travelers prefer bringing their own for hygiene and comfort.

The “safari look” is practical, not just for photos.

  • Layers: It is freezing on the Ngorongoro Crater rim at night/dawn, but dusty and hot in the Serengeti by noon.
  • Colors: Wear neutral tones (khaki, beige, olive). Avoid bright white (gets dirty instantly), dark blue/black (attracts Tsetse flies), and camo patterns (reserved for the military).

Most safari Land Cruisers are equipped with UK-style power inverters. You can charge your phone and camera batteries while driving between game spots. It’s still smart to bring a high-capacity power bank for nighttime use in your tent.

Tipping is a standard and expected part of the culture in Tanzania. Tips are usually given on the last day.

Standard 2026 Guidelines (per group, per day):

  • Driver-Guide: $20 – $30
  • Safari Chef: $15 – $20

Budget safaris usually exclude your Visa ($50–$100), travel insurance, laundry, soda/alcohol, and “optional” activities like a Maasai Village visit ($10–$20) or a Serengeti Balloon Safari ($550+).
