Day 1

Arusha/Moshi – Londorossi Gate – Shira 1 Camp

Your adventure begins with a scenic drive to the western side of Kilimanjaro.

Morning: Pickup from your hotel and a 2–3 hour drive to Londorossi Gate (2,250m). Here, you will complete the mandatory National Park registration and meet your mountain crew.

The Drive: After registration, you continue driving further up through the lush Montane Forest—keep an eye out for Black-and-White Colobus monkeys—until you reach the Morum Barrier Gate (3,400m).

The Hike: From Morum Gate, you begin your trek across the moorland zone. The path is relatively flat but the air is thin. You will hike for about 1.5 to 2 hours to reach Shira 1 Camp (3,500m).

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What exactly is the Shira Plateau?

It is a massive, high-altitude plateau located on the western side of Kilimanjaro. It’s actually the remains of the first of Kilimanjaro’s three volcanic cones to expire (the others being Mawenzi and Kibo). It sits at approximately 3,500m to 3,900m (11,500ft to 12,800ft).

Via Lemosho Route: Most hikers reach the plateau on Day 2 or 3 of the Lemosho route.

Via Shira Route: You can drive a 4WD vehicle up to the Shira Gate (about 3,500m) and start hiking directly onto the plateau. This is often used for shorter treks or by those looking to skip the rainforest zone.

The terrain on the plateau itself is relatively flat and undulating compared to the rest of the mountain. However, the altitude is the real challenge. Because you start high, you may feel the effects of thinning air almost immediately.

Expect a “moonscape” vibe mixed with moorland vegetation. You’ll see:

  • Giant Lobelias and Senecios (prehistoric-looking plants).
  • The Shira Cathedral (a massive rock buttress).
  • Panoramic views of the Kibo peak to the east.

Yes. Mount Kilimanjaro is a National Park, and trekking without a licensed guide and a permit is prohibited. Even for a short “Shira only” hike, you’ll need a full support crew (guide, cook, and porters).

The plateau is notorious for being windy and cold.

  • Layers: High-quality base layers, a down jacket, and a hardshell windbreaker.
  • Sun Protection: At 3,800m, the sun is incredibly intense. Bring Category 3 or 4 sunglasses and SPF 50+.
  • Hydration: Drink at least 3-4 liters of water a day to help with acclimatization.
