Second Cave Camp is a quiet campsite located on the northern slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro at approximately 3,450 meters (11,319 feet) above sea level. The camp is mainly used by trekkers following the Northern Circuit and Rongai routes, offering a peaceful overnight stop away from the busier southern trails.
The camp is named after nearby lava cave formations found within the area. The surrounding landscape features open moorland terrain, scattered shrubs, and volcanic rock formations, with wide views stretching toward Kenya’s Amboseli plains. The environment is calm and less crowded, making it ideal for trekkers seeking a quieter Kilimanjaro experience.
The trek to Second Cave Camp usually involves a gradual ascent through heath and moorland vegetation. Climbers often appreciate the slower pace and gentler terrain, which support proper acclimatization before moving to higher camps. The camp’s location on the northern side of the mountain also provides a drier climate compared to the southern routes.
