There is currently no established route or infrastructure to cycle to Uhuru Peak on Mount Kilimanjaro.

Cycling is primarily a ground-level activity, while Uhuru Peak is the summit of a mountain, reached by hiking or climbing. The terrain is extremely challenging, with varying altitudes, steep inclines, and often treacherous conditions.

Best Time to Climb Kilimanjaro
If you’re interested in climbing Kilimanjaro on foot, the best times are during the dry seasons:

December to February: This is the peak season with clear skies and warm temperatures.
June to October: This is the shoulder season with fewer crowds and pleasant weather.
These periods offer the best conditions for hiking and acclimatization.

Cycling On Mount Kilimanjaro 5 Days

The Kilimanjaro Bound, Cycling On Mount Kilimanjaro 5 Days Trek and Adventure is a new addition for travelers to Mount Kilimanjaro.

The Kilema Route is the only route that Mountain Bikers can use to reach Uhuru Peak, the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro.

The entire trip to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro (5895 m) will take 5 days with proper acclimatization.

This activity provides physical exercise and recreational use of the natural environment with minimum impact while enhancing our travelers experience.

Kilimanjaro Bound cyclists who wish to reach the summit at Uhuru Peak will use Kilema Route (19 km), meeting their porters at Horombo and continue to the summit from there.

For Kilimanjaro Bound cyclists who are not heading to the summit, the cycling starts from Londorosi Gate or from Morum Picnic Site then back to Morum (44 km).

Itinerary for Cycling On Mount Kilimanjaro 5 Days

Day 1. Arrival and welcome to Tanzania.

Arriving any time at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), there will be a private transfer waiting at the Airport to collect and get you to your hotel in Moshi where you will be able to relax and enjoy your first night in Moshi, Tanzania.

Your Kilimanjaro Bound tour guide will meet you at your hotel for a Mount Kilimanjaro cycling and safety brief, plus a full equipment check.

We will also check and confirm you have the appropriate mandatory medical coverage and travel insurance.

Day 2. Marangu or Kilema Gate to Horombo Hut. (Distance: 19 km).

You will be collected at your hotel at 8:30 am and then driven through Mount Kilimanjaro’s semi tropical foothills to Marangu Gate.

Here we will register for access to Mount Kilimanjaro and receive climbing permits, we then drive to Kilema Gate and enter Kilimanjaro National park and start riding and travel to Horombo Hut.

Day 3. Full Day Acclimatization at Horombo Hut. (Distance: 10 km).

Following breakfast we start cycling again, riding through Alpine Desert, some of the areas you will riding on are small and loose stones, we will travel all the way up to Mawenzi Hut and then return back to Horombo Hut.

Day 4. Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut (4703 m).

After breakfast you will be riding up to Kibo Hut (4703 m), the ground under your wheels will be mainly small and loose stones.

Day 5. Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak (5895 m) and then return to Horombo Hut (3720 m).

About 12 am, you will be awakened by your guide to start the zigzag ride and trek up a long screen slop. After roughly two hours you will reach Hans Meyer’s Cave and from here the gradient gets steeper.

We continue the climb for another 3 hours until we reach Gilman’s Point. Here, you will take your bike from Porters and start riding to Uhuru Peak, the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro. When you arrive at Uhuru Peak you will have some time to enjoy your achievement and take some photos. You will then be ready to ride down to Stella Point.

On arrival at Stella Point, you will have time to rest and enjoy a well earned lunch. Once you have finished lunch you will be able to ride the rest of the way down to Horombo Hut.

Day 6. Horombo to Kilema Gate.

After a leisurely breakfast, you will be ready to make your final descent down to Kilema Gate, across the Alpine Desert and Rain Forest to Kilema Gate.

You will then be transferred to Marangu Gate to sign off of Mount Kilimanjaro and then enjoy a drive back to your hotel, where you can relax, rest and think about your fantastic journey.

Day 7. Kilimanjaro Airport or Continue Your African Adventure.

Your room at the Lodge is reserved for late checkout so that you can relax before your flight home or a new destination if you signed up for one of our optional excursions.

If you fly back home, your driver will meet you for the transfer to the airport.

In March 2016, seven-time world champion, author and volunteer firefighter Rebecca Rusch and adventurer Patrick Sweeney summited Mount Kilimanjaro.

The duo took on Africa’s highest peak to raise funds and awareness for the nonprofit organization, World Bicycle Relief.

Rusch and Sweeney rode, carried and pushed their bikes to the summit at 19,341 feet then braved the journey back down, with the goal to ultimately raise one dollar for every foot of elevation. Raising $19,341 will equal 131 new bikes for students in Africa.
