  • Got Questions?

Kilimanjaro Climbing FAQ

Mount Kilimanjaro is located in northeastern Tanzania, East Africa, near the border with Kenya. The nearest international gateway is Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), situated between the trekking hubs of Moshi and Arusha.

The best months to climb are during the two dry seasons:

  • January to March: Generally colder but offers clear skies and quieter trails.
  • June to October: The most popular time, characterized by warm days and very stable weather.
  • Pro Tip: Avoid the “long rains” in April and May, which make trails slippery and summit visibility poor.

The Lemosho and Machame routes are highly recommended for beginners. They offer a “climb high, sleep low” profile, which is critical for acclimatization. For those seeking the highest success rate, the Northern Circuit (9 days) is the gold standard.

Success varies significantly by the length of the trek:

  • 5-Day Routes: ~25-30% success rate.
  • 7-Day Routes: ~70-85% success rate.
  • 8+ Day Routes: Over 90% success rate. Expert Tip: Choose a longer itinerary to give your body time to adjust to the thinning oxygen.

A reputable, mid-range climb typically costs between $1,800 and $3,200 USD. This price covers National Park fees, rescue fees, professional guides, porters, food, and high-quality camping equipment.

You don’t need to be an elite athlete, but you do need cardiovascular endurance. Focus your training on:

  • Hiking: 4–6 hour walks with a weighted daypack.
  • Leg Strength: Squats, lunges, and stair-climbing.
  • Mental Toughness: The summit night is a 12–15 hour round trip in freezing temperatures.

Altitude is the #1 reason climbers fail to summit. Follow these “Golden Rules”:

  • Pole Pole: Swahili for “Slowly, Slowly.” Never rush.
  • Hydration: Drink 3–4 liters of water daily.
  • Acclimatization: Choose a route with at least 7 days.
  • Medication: Consult your doctor about Diamox (Acetazolamide) to help your body process oxygen more efficiently.

Layering is key. Your gear should include:

  • Base Layer: Moisture-wicking merino wool or synthetic (no cotton!).
  • Mid-Layer: A heavy fleece or “puffy” down jacket.
  • Outer Shell: Waterproof and windproof GORE-TEX jacket and pants.
  • Footwear: Mid-to-high cut waterproof boots (broken in!) and thermal socks.
  • Technical Gear: 30L daypack, -15°C (5°F) rated sleeping bag, and trekking poles.

we generally provide three hot, calorie-dense meals a day designed for high-altitude energy. Expect porridge and eggs for breakfast; soup, sandwiches, or pasta for lunch; and stews, rice, or potatoes for dinner. Most dietary requirements (Vegan, Gluten-Free) can be accommodated with prior notice.

Tipping is a standard practice in Tanzania to support the hardworking crew. Expect to tip approximately $250–$350 per climber for the entire crew (guides, cooks, and porters).
