Climbing Mount Kilimanjaro

Umbre Route 6 Days

Umbre Route 6 Days is the shortest route on to the summit on Mount Kilimanjaro, the path can be a very muddy and challenging experience, particularly if it has rained recently!

It is a steep and rough trail up to the first camp, Umbwe Cave. Because of the difficulties, this route offers a real sense of adventure for intrepid climbers who wish to challenge themselves.

If you want to ask us anything at all after reading this itinerary for Umbre Route 6 Days, you can contact us online and we will get back to you as soon as possible.

Kilimanjaro Bound will take care of you and your party and organise everything you need for the trip of a lifetime.

More about Umbre Route 6 Days on Wikipedia.

  • Steep, short route with lower success rate.
  • Poor acclimatization because of rapid ascent.
  • Very remote and quiet.
  • Fully catered camping only.

Of all the routes, Umbwe Route 6 Days is by far the most scenic albeit steeper route up the mountain. The Rongai Route is the easiest camping route and the Marangu Route is also easy, but accommodation is in huts.

As a result, this route tends to be very busy and ascent and descent routes are the same. Although the Rongai Route is a flatter walk, it offers less opportunities for acclimatisation. The Machame Route and Lemosho Route both allow better opportunities to “walk high and sleep low”, which is critical to avoiding altitude sickness.

Itinerary for Umbre Route 6 Days

Day 1: Arrive in Moshi.

Whatever time you land at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) a member of the Kilimanjaro Bound Team will be there to meet you. We will transfer you from the Airport to your hotel or lodge in Moshi.

We will gather in the hotel for a pre-climb briefing and an equipment check. We will also confirm you have the appropriate mandatory medical coverage and travel insurance ready to start your Mount Kilimanjaro Adventure the next day.

DAY 2: Umbre Cave. (Hiking Time: 6-8 hours / Altitude: 3000 m).

Your climb starts from Umbwe Gate (1400 m) and follows a path on a ridge between two deep valleys up through the dense Montane Forest.

On sunny days, and especially in the dry season, this section is very lush and beautiful, it can also be a very muddy experience, particularly if it has rained recently!

It is a steep and rough walk up to Umbre Cave, our first camp.

Day 3. Barranco Valley. (Hiking Time: 4-6 hours / Altitude: 3950 m).

The path gets steeper on this section, as you get out of the forest. In one place it is necessary to do a bit of climbing and scrambling past a 10 meter rock, but after that the path gets easier.

The views starts to open up and the vegetation is now the typical moorland with giant Senecios around us. The Ice Fields at Kibo will also become clearly visible. Baranco Camp is in the Barranco Valley at 3950 m.

Our Camp also has spectacular views to both Kibo and the plains beneath.

Day 4. Karanga Campsite. (Hiking Time: 4-5 hours / Altitude: 4000 m).

A steep climb up the Barranco Wall leads us to an undulating trail on the South Eastern flank of Kibo, with superb vistas of the Southern Ice Fields. The terrain changes to scree, with pockets of lush vegetation in sheltered hollows. There is only a short distance to our camp at Karanga, the last water point on the approach to Barafu.

There is plenty of time to rest or if you are feeling strong you can go for a short optional acclimatisation walk in the afternoon along the valley above the camp.

Day 5: Barafu Camp. (Hiking Time: 4-5 hours / Altitude: 4600 m).

A short but steep climb out of Karanga Camp and an easy path on compacted scree with wide views to reach Mweka Junction (4150 m). We then climb steadily to reach the Barafu Campsite (4600 m). The remainder of the day is spent resting in preparation for the final ascent before an early night.

Day 6. Mweka Forest Camp. (Hiking Time: 13-15 hours / Altitude: 3100 m).

We will start our ascent by torchlight around midnight so that we can be up on the Crater Rim for a beautiful sunrise. The steep climb over loose volcanic scree has some well-graded zig zag’s and a slow but steady pace will take us to Stella Point at 5735 m and take about five or six hours.

We will rest there for a short time to enjoy the sunrise over Mawenzi. Those who are still feeling strong can then make the two hour round trip from Stella Point, along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak, the summit f Mount Kilimanjaro at 5896 m. We will pass close to the spectacular glaciers and ice cliffs that still occupy most of the summit area.

After spending time at Uhuru Peak to enjoy your impressive  accomplishment we will start the descent to Barafu. We will collect the rest of the group back at Stella Point and head down Kilimanjaro, the descent is surprisingly fast and will continue until we reach our final campsite, Mweka Forest Camp.

Most of us will be too tired to notice the beauty of the forest surrounding the crowded campsite and you will stay overnight here to recharge your aching body.

Day 7. Mweka Forest Camp to Mweka Gate. (Hiking Time: 3-5 hours / Altitude: 1650 m).

A sustained descent through lovely forest with lush undergrowth takes us to Mweka National Park Gate where you will collect your certificate for taking on Mount Kilimanjaro and have an emotional farewell saying goodbye to the porters, cooks and guides from Kilimanjaro Bound who have become your friends over the time of trekking Umbre Route 6 Days.

Day 8: Moshi to Kilimanjaro International Airport or onto more Tanzanian Adventures.

One of the Kilimanjaro Bound Team will arrange for you to get to Kilimanjaro International Airport for your journey home, however, many travelers stay with us and go on to enjoy more of our beautiful country.

This may be on Safari in one of our stunning Tanzanian National Parks or to Zanzibar to enjoy a well earned break by the beach.

The choice is yours and Kilimanjaro Bound are here to take care of everything that you need.
